MARSTENEN (POSSIBLY) - Scapa Flow, Orkney

Marstenen is definitely one of Scapa Flow’s deeper, less-frequented wrecks, and that’s precisely why we love it. Dropping down, you’re looking at 57 metres, so twinsets and deco planning are a given. This isn’t a site for a quick dip. The visibility can be surprisingly good on a calm day, though, sometimes pushing 15 metres, which really helps bring the ship into focus. She’s a steamship, sunk in 1940 by German aircraft, sitting upright and largely intact. You can trace her from bow to stern, about 60 metres of history. We always find the engine room particularly captivating; it’s open enough to peer into the machinery, all covered in anemones and dead man's fingers. Our favourite part is the stern, where the propeller still sits, an impressive sight at that depth. Around the wreck, expect to see plenty of pollack and conger eels making their homes in the deeper crevices. It’s a site for experienced wreck divers who appreciate the quiet solitude of a deeper dive and the chance to explore a piece of wartime history without the crowds. Go on a slack tide for the best experience.
