PIONERSK - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The PIONERSK isn’t a deep dive, not even close, but that’s precisely why we love it. This isn't about crushing depths; it's about surface-level exploration and the sheer audacity of a massive factory ship aground and broken. Stranded stern-first in a gale back in '94, her spine is snapped, and she lies mostly exposed to the elements, making her an incredible shallow snorkel or dive, especially on a calm day. It’s all about the superstructure here. You can swim right through the wheelhouse, seeing the shattered remnants of what was once the bridge. We’ve spent hours just picking through the various decks, finding discarded galley equipment, rusted engine room components, and the odd boot. Schools of saithe dart through the open companionways, and we often spot butterfish tucked into crevices. The wreck has become a home for crabs and anemones, clinging to every available surface. It’s a compelling, eerie experience, a stark reminder of nature's power, best explored slowly, allowing the details to emerge.
