With 140+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - RMS Oceanic offers some of Scapa Flow, Orkney's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 8-14°C, warmest July, August, September.
The RMS Oceanic lies just off the coast of Graemsay, a grand old ocean liner that came to an untimely end. She’s broken up quite a bit, but you can still pick out the bow section, a distinct shape on the seabed, and various machinery scattered around. We’ve found her to be a great spot for seeing the classic Scapa Flow residents – wrasse picking through the structure, the occasional inquisitive seal, and plenty of anemones and sponges adding colour to the metal. It’s not the towering superstructures of other Scapa wrecks, but it’s an accessible dive, suitable for divers who appreciate history and enjoy exploring a more dispersed site.
Safety Notes
Wreck site - avoid penetration without wreck diving certification. Watch for sharp metal and entanglement hazards.
Cold water this month (avg 13°C). Drysuit or thick wetsuit (7mm+) recommended.
