SMS Karlsruhe - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The SMS Karlsruhe, lying inverted in Scapa Flow, is a deeply atmospheric dive. Drop down and you’re instantly met with the sheer scale of her, a huge metal hulk that’s slowly being reclaimed by the sea. We love working our way along her hull, peering into the shadowed spaces and imagining the chaos of her scuttling. Inside, the engine room offers some great swim-throughs, though a good light and solid buoyancy are essential – it’s tight in places. Look out for the resident lumpsuckers clinging to the bulkheads and the feathery plumes of shore feather duster worms waving in the slight surge. Outside, the exposed metalwork is a canvas for life; corkwing wrasse dart between the rivets, and you’ll often spot a curious common seal making a fly-by. This wreck is fantastic for intermediate divers who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a chill; the visibility can be excellent, but it’s still Scapa, so expect that characteristic cool, green water. We’d suggest diving this one on a slack tide to really enjoy the penetration.
