WATCHFUL - Scapa Flow, Orkney

Watchful is one of those unexpected Scapa Flow sites that proves not everything has to be a German battleship to be interesting. This 18-meter fishing vessel went down in 1994, not in Scapa itself, but off Fraserburgh. She was towed into the Flow some years later and now sits upright at a modest 13 metres. We love that you can genuinely poke around here without needing deco gas or a technical trimix certification. The wheelhouse is the obvious starting point, with a surprising amount of gear still in place – a compass, some dials, it feels like the crew just stepped away. From there, you can drop into the hold, a dark, cavernous space that often has a few resident conger eels eyeing you suspiciously. Shoals of saithe swirl around the mast, and the deck, while mostly collapsed, is covered in a thick carpet of plumose anemones, their white tentacles swaying with the gentle surge. It’s a site that suits divers who enjoy a relaxed pace, those who prefer intimacy over scale, and honestly, it’s our favourite spot for a second dive of the day when you want something easy but still engaging.
