The *Alex Hastings* is one of Scapa Flow's lesser-known wrecks, often overlooked for the German High Seas Fleet. But we think that's a mistake. This steam trawler, sunk in 1917, is a fantastic dive for anyone who loves exploring a proper wreck, not just looking at a big outline. You'll find her sitting upright, about 25 metres down, remarkably intact for her age. We love finning along her deck, peering into the collapsed wheelhouse, and exploring the holds which are now home to thick clusters of beadlet anemones. The engine room is a highlight, quite open and accessible, where you can often spot large common sea stars clinging to the machinery. Visibility here can be variable, but even on a greener day, the wreck's structure stands out beautifully. It's a great second dive after one of the big battleships, offering a completely different vibe – more intimate, more about discovery. Just keep an eye on the thermocline, it can get chilly.

    Safety Notes

Wreck site - avoid penetration without wreck diving certification. Watch for sharp metal and entanglement hazards.

Cold water this month (avg 13°C). Drysuit or thick wetsuit (7mm+) recommended.
