Wreck of Atland (Possibly) - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The Roedean is a Scapa Flow wreck we always make time for. She’s not one of the big German warships, but this old 1897 minesweeper has a charm all her own, especially when you’re drifting along her decks, poking into nooks and crannies. You’ll find her upright, and we love the way the light filters down through the Orkney green water, illuminating the hull. What really makes the Roedean for us is the marine life. Forget your tropical reefs; here it’s all about the texture and resilience. The deck is a carpet of Irish moss and carragheen, swaying with the gentle flow. Keep an eye out for common sea stars clinging to the bulkheads and huge sulphur sponges providing shelter for poor cod. You’ll often spot anglerfish tucked into recesses, perfectly camouflaged. We’d suggest a slow, deliberate dive here, giving yourself time to really appreciate the smaller details. This isn’t a wreck for penetration, but more for exploring the outside, discovering the layers of history and life that have settled on her.
