Wreck of Ben Doran - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The Ben Doran feels like a proper piece of history, just waiting for you to stumble across it. We’ve always been drawn to wrecks that tell a story, and this trawler, scuttled in the Grand Harbour of Scapa Flow in 1919, absolutely does. Dropping down, the stern comes into view first, resting on its starboard side, largely intact, with the bow more broken up. We love tracing the deck, navigating through the holds that are now home to plump conger eels and schools of cod. Look closely and you’ll find plenty of plumose anemones, their white tentacles swaying gently in the subtle current, like a ghostly garden. It's not a deep dive, around 14 metres, which means you get excellent bottom time to really explore the nooks and crannies. We’d suggest a slow, methodical swim, taking in the structural details and imagining the life it once held. Visibility can vary, but on a good day, the light filtering through the Orkney green water gives the whole scene an ethereal glow. It’s perfect for divers who appreciate the quieter side of wreck diving, a chance to really connect with history beneath the surface without fighting strong currents or contending with crowds.
