Wreck of Duchess - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The Duchess, lying in Scapa Flow, is one of those wrecks that really comes alive under your torch. We love how her superstructure is largely intact, making for some excellent penetration dives if you’re properly trained and equipped. You’ll find schools of saithe swirling around the bridge, their silver scales flashing as you move through the gloom. On the deck, we often spot wrasse picking at the growth, and there are always plenty of squat lobsters tucked into every crevice. The real draw here, beyond the history, is the sheer scale and the way the wreck has become a reef. Our favourite time to dive her is on a calm day, when the light penetrates just enough to highlight the outlines of the cargo holds. We’d suggest focusing on the bow section; the sheer size of the anchor chains and the foremast are impressive. Watch your trim inside, though; silt can be an issue if you’re not careful. This site suits divers comfortable in colder water, who appreciate historical wrecks and aren't afraid of a bit of an overhead environment.
