Why dive here
With 140+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - Wreck of Ferrol offers some of Scapa Flow, Orkney's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 8-14°C, warmest July, August, September.
The *Ferrol* isn’t the grandest of Scapa Flow’s wrecks, but we find her endlessly fascinating. She’s a German auxiliary trawler, deliberately scuttled in 1919 and sitting mostly intact on her port side in about 20 metres. We love how accessible she is; a perfect introduction for those new to Scapa's deeper, darker wrecks, or a lovely leisurely dive for seasoned pros. You’ll drop down onto the hull, often finding inquisitive wrasse and small shoals of coalfish darting in and out of the plating. Her superstructure is relatively broken, but the bow and stern sections are still clearly defined, offering some interesting swim-throughs if you're comfortable with overhead environments. Look inside the holds for plumose anemones, their white tentacles waving gently in the slight current, and keep an eye on the seafloor nearby for flatfish camouflaged against the silt. Visibility here can swing dramatically, but on a good day, the light filtering through the gloom gives the *Ferrol* a real sense of presence. Our top tip? Go during a neap tide for the calmest conditions and best light penetration.
Safety Notes
Wreck site - avoid penetration without wreck diving certification. Watch for sharp metal and entanglement hazards.
Cold water this month (avg 13°C). Drysuit or thick wetsuit (7mm+) recommended.
