Why dive here
With 140+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - Wreck of Golfer offers some of Scapa Flow, Orkney's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 8-14°C, warmest July, August, September.
The *Golfer* is one of those Scapa Flow wrecks that often gets overshadowed, but honestly, we think it’s a brilliant dive, especially if you’re looking for something a little different from the big German battleships. It’s a trawler, sunk during a storm in 1919, and sits mostly intact on its port side in about 16 to 18 metres of water. We love poking around her bow, where the anchor chain still drapes over the deck, and the stern, where you can still make out the propeller. What really makes the *Golfer* special for us is the life she holds. The wheelhouse is a fantastic spot, often packed with schooling pollack, and we’ve seen some surprisingly large lobsters tucked into crevices along the hull. Look closely at the deck planking, now softened by time and encrusted with anemones – a truly mesmerising sight. She’s a great wreck for newer drysuit divers looking to gain some confidence on something a bit shallower, or for seasoned wreck hounds wanting a relaxed, photogenic dive away from the crowds. Go on a sunny day if you can; the shafts of light penetrating the shallows make it magical.
Safety Notes
Wreck site - avoid penetration without wreck diving certification. Watch for sharp metal and entanglement hazards.
Cold water this month (avg 13°C). Drysuit or thick wetsuit (7mm+) recommended.
