Wreck of Lorne - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The Eamont. Now, this is a wreck with a story, even amongst the giants of Scapa Flow. We love it because it’s surprisingly intact for a Blockship, sitting upright, her bow still pointing defiance into the current. Drop down and you’re immediately enveloped by the gloom, the steel structure silhouetted against the ambient light filtering through the Orkney green water. Inside, we’ve found everything from hefty lobsters tucked into every crevice, to schools of saithe that drift through the holds like grey ghosts. The Eamont offers fantastic penetration opportunities for those with the right training, winding through her companionways and cargo areas. Even if you stay on the outside, the deck structures are encrusted with anemones and hydroids, a riot of colour in the beam of your torch. It’s a dive that rewards slow exploration, letting the history and the marine life unfold around you. For divers who appreciate history and close-up marine encounters, the Eamont is a must-do. Just be mindful of the currents; Scapa can be frisky, so pick your slack water carefully.
