Why dive here
With 140+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - Wreck of Ord Young offers some of Scapa Flow, Orkney's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 8-14°C, warmest July, August, September.
The *Ord Young* is one of those Scapa Flow wrecks that just *feels* like history. It’s not the biggest, or the deepest, but it has a real character. Dropping down, you’ll find her mostly intact, lying on her port side, and she’s a great introduction for divers who want to explore inside a wreck without getting into anything too committing. We love nosing around the engine room, still remarkably preserved, with gauges and machinery clinging on. What really makes the *Ord Young* shine for us, though, is the sheer density of conger eels. They are *everywhere*. You’ll spot their heads poking out from every nook and cranny, sometimes three or four in a single opening. Look closely and you’ll also find plenty of lobsters and crabs tucked away. Visibility here can swing a bit, but usually, it’s good enough to appreciate the scale. We’d suggest going at slack water, obviously, to really take your time and soak it all in. It’s a genuinely engaging dive, a real highlight for anyone keen on the Scapa Flow story.
