Wreck of Promotive - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The Promotive is one of those Scapa Flow wrecks that really rewards a thorough exploration. Sitting upright in about 16 metres of water, she’s a former minelayer, and that history still feels palpable as you fin past her decks. We love picking our way through the remains of her superstructure, the steel plates draped in dead man’s fingers and anemones. Look closely and you’ll find plenty of inquisitive wrasse darting between the metalwork, and we often spot conger eels tucked into shadowy corners. The real magic happens when the light penetrates the deeper parts of the wreck, illuminating the dense growth of plumose anemones – it’s a stunning sight. Our favourite part is the bow, surprisingly intact and often home to a decent school of saithe. This is a brilliant dive for anyone who appreciates a bit of history with their wreck diving, offering plenty of nooks and crannies without being overly complex. Just be prepared for that signature Scapa chill, even in summer.
