Why dive here
With 140+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - Wreck of Scandinavic offers some of Scapa Flow, Orkney's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 8-14°C, warmest July, August, September.
The *Scandinavia* offers a stark, impressive dive, even if she isn't as intact as some of her Scapa Flow neighbours. We love that she's broken down, scattered across the seabed like a forgotten toybox. You drop onto the stern, which still holds its shape, before navigating a debris field of twisted metal and plates. It’s here that the resident lumpsuckers often make an appearance, clinging to rust-covered beams. The bow section, further east, is our favourite part. It’s a mess of tangled steel, but the light filtering through the Orkney green water illuminates the sheer scale of the collapse. We'd suggest taking your time to pick through the wreckage; you’ll find plenty of smaller invertebrates like sea mats and anemones making a home here. It’s not a swim-through kind of wreck, more of a landscape to explore, offering a different kind of challenge and reward. Perfect for divers who appreciate the history and the slow reclamation by nature.
Safety Notes
