The SMS Dresden, sunk in Scapa Flow’s murky embrace, isn’t just a wreck; it’s a time capsule. We love the sheer scale of this Cöln-class cruiser, settled on her port side, giving you a unique perspective as you descend. Your torch beam cuts through the green gloom, picking out the giant rivets, the gaping holes from scuttling charges, and the ghostly skeletal remains of her superstructure. We always feel a profound sense of history here, a real connection to that dramatic day in 1919. This is a dive for the experienced, for those who appreciate the challenge and the story. You’ll weave through her massive hull, perhaps catching a bull rout peering from a porthole or the vibrant jewel anemones clinging to corroded steel. Our favourite part is finding those subtle details, like the remnants of deck plating or a stray pipe, now completely colonised by delicate Ribbon Weed. Visibility can be a challenge, so a good dive light is essential, and going at slack tide makes exploration far more enjoyable. It’s a cold, dark dive, but the reward is immense.
