The SMS S50, a destroyer from the German High Seas Fleet, offers a different flavour of Scapa Flow diving. While some of the bigger blockships feel like underwater mountains, the S50 is more intimate, a true exploration. We love how the hull plates have folded in on themselves, creating these dark, intriguing swim-throughs that really get your torch working. Dropping down, the visibility here often feels a touch clearer than some of the deeper sites, letting you appreciate the delicate encrusting sponges and anemones that have found a home on the steel. Look out for those common dragonets darting between the frames, and sometimes you’ll even spot a harbour porpoise cruising overhead on the surface. We always suggest taking a moment to just hang mid-water, feeling that gentle Scapa current, and imagining the sheer history resting below. It’s a dive that rewards careful exploration over frantic swimming.
