Wreck of SMS S54 (secondary location) - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The Wreck of HMT Beech sits quietly on the seabed of Scapa Flow, a spot we always enjoy for its sheer historical weight. It’s not the biggest wreck in the Flow, not by a long shot, but what we love about Beech is its manageability. You can comfortably get a good feel for the entire ship in a single dive, something that's harder with some of the larger German fleet vessels. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is the cold, silty embrace of the Flow, but then the shape of the trawler emerges. There's an immediate sense of her working life, even in decay. We've found lobsters tucked into nooks in the engine room, and the bow section, often partially collapsed, is a favourite haunt for jewel anemones, their colours popping in the torchlight. Visibility here can be a bit of a lottery, sometimes a clear 10 metres, sometimes a murky 3, so a good dive light is essential. Keep an eye out for the resident wrasse darting in and out of the plating; they’re pretty bold here. It’s a dive that rewards slow exploration, peering into the shadowed spaces where the past still feels present, and the marine life thrives on the structure.
