With 140+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - Wreck of St Catherine offers some of Scapa Flow, Orkney's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 8-14°C, warmest July, August, September.
The St Catherine, one of Scapa Flow's smaller German fleet wrecks, offers a genuinely intimate experience. She lies on her starboard side, mostly intact, and despite the low visibility that often characterises Scapa, we find her remarkably penetrable. Our favourite part has to be finning through the open cargo holds, where daylight still filters down, creating an eerie, almost cathedral-like glow. You’ll weave past schools of cod and pollock that dart between the frames, and every crevice seems to hide a plumose anemone or a squat lobster. The St Catherine is perfect for divers looking to spend time exploring internal structures without venturing too deep into the darker reaches; it’s less about grand scale and more about the quiet, atmospheric beauty of a wreck slowly being reclaimed by the sea. Just be mindful of the silt – a slow, controlled fin kick is your best friend here.
