Why dive here
With 140+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - Wreck of Unnamed Shipwreck - Canmore 101718 offers some of Scapa Flow, Orkney's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 8-14°C, warmest July, August, September.
The unnamed Canmore 101718 wreck in Scapa Flow, to us, is a perfect argument for diving some of the lesser-known historical finds. It’s not one of the massive German warships, but that’s precisely its charm. We love the intimacy of this site. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is the cold embrace of the Orkney water, quickly followed by the distinct silhouette of a much smaller vessel. The wreck itself is largely intact, lying on its side, and you can spend a good portion of a dive exploring the deck structure and imagining its final moments. Visibility here can swing, but on a good day, the light filters down, illuminating the incredible growth of plumose anemones that cling to every surface like a shaggy white carpet. We’ve seen conger eels peering from dark recesses and often find wolfish lurking in the deeper holds. It’s a dive that rewards slow exploration rather than grand spectacle. Our favourite approach is to take your time, poke around, and soak in the quiet history. This site suits divers who appreciate historical context and the way nature reclaims man-made structures.
