Wreck of Unnamed Shipwreck - Canmore 101723 - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The Eugene T. Chamberlain is one of Scapa Flow's softer wrecks, and that's precisely why we love it. Forget the dramatic, upright battleships; this is a delightful jumble of a steamer, broken into three distinct sections. You'll drop onto the bow, often finding it draped in kelp, then navigate the scattered plates and twisted metal. It’s a shallower dive, usually around 15 to 20 metres, making it perfect for longer bottom times, really allowing you to soak in the atmosphere. We always make a point of searching for the boilers – they're substantial, upright, and usually swarming with coalfish, darting in and out of the grates. Look closely at the hull plates for jewel anemones; their colours are surprisingly vivid against the grey steel. On a good day, with a bit of sunlight filtering through the often green water, you’ll see clouds of small baitfish shimmering around the deeper parts of the stern section. It’s a rummage, a gentle exploration, rather than a penetration dive, making it accessible to many. We always suggest keeping an eye out for the resident lobsters, tucked into any crevice they can find.
