Scapa Flow holds more secrets than just the famous German High Seas Fleet, and the Unnamed Shipwreck, Canmore 102978, is one of those quieter, compelling stories. We’ve always had a soft spot for these less-dived wrecks, where the history feels a little more personal, less crowded. Descending onto her, the first thing you notice is the way the cold Orkney water has draped her in a tapestry of plumose anemones and dead man’s fingers. She’s not a massive wreck, certainly not a battleship, but her structure is surprisingly intact, offering plenty of nooks to poke a light into. We particularly love the bow section, often home to a grumpy wolf fish eyeing you from a shadowy crevice. The visibility here can be temperamental – typical Scapa, really – but on a good day, with the sunlight filtering down, the sheer density of life, from scuttling crabs to shoals of coalfish, is captivating. This is a dive for those who appreciate the quiet dignity of a working vessel lost to time, and for divers who find beauty in the intricate ecosystems that flourish on these iron ghosts.
