With 140+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - Wreck of Unnamed Shipwreck - Canmore 196025 offers some of Scapa Flow, Orkney's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 8-14°C, warmest July, August, September.
Scapa Flow holds more mysteries than just the Grand Fleet, and this unnamed wreck, Canmore 196025, is one of our favourites for a low-key explore. You won't find the drama of a battleship here, but that’s its charm. Dropping onto the deck, the ship feels almost delicate, draped in a carpet of anemones and dead man’s fingers. We love how the ambient light filters through the kelp, giving the whole site a ghostly, ethereal glow. We've spent hours tracing the outline of her collapsed bow, watching the small Pollock dart in and out of the skeletal frames. It’s a site for contemplation, for imagining the life she once held, rather than a deep penetration dive. Look closely around the scattered debris for the bright flashes of wrasse, and keep an eye out for a grumpy crab peeking from a porthole. This wreck is perfect for divers who appreciate the quiet beauty of history reclaimed by the sea.
Safety Notes
Wreck site - avoid penetration without wreck diving certification. Watch for sharp metal and entanglement hazards.
Cold water this month (avg 13°C). Drysuit or thick wetsuit (7mm+) recommended.
