HMT LOWDOCK - Scottish East Coast & Borders
The HMT Lowdock, down at 51 metres, feels like stepping back in time. We love the way she sits upright, almost defiant, a real classic British trawler from 1917, sunk during a collision in 1940. Dropping down, the visibility can be a bit of a lottery, as it often is off the Scottish East Coast, but when it’s good, it’s really good. You get this fantastic sense of scale as the stern post and prop shaft emerge from the gloom. Inside, the triple expansion engine is a massive, tangible piece of history, just begging for a torch beam to pick out its details. It’s dark down there, a proper deep dive, so bring a good primary and a backup. We’ve had some great encounters with huge resident conger eels making their homes in the deeper sections of the hull, and the occasional ling or cod will eye you from the shadows. This is a dive for experienced wreck enthusiasts, divers comfortable with decompression and variable conditions. It’s an immersion in maritime history, cloaked in the cold, green embrace of the North Sea.
