URDATE - Scottish East Coast & Borders

The URDATE isn’t about depth or big pelagics, it’s a living history lesson at 6m, a true shallow treasure. We love how accessible this site is, making it perfect for a relaxed dive or even a lengthy snorkel on a calm day. You’re exploring the remains of a colliery paddle steamer that went down in 1830, and the sheer age of it lends a real sense of atmosphere; the timbers, now heavily eroded, almost hum with stories. What you'll find is a scattered wreck, broken up over time, but the various pieces of machinery and hull structure are still wonderfully distinct. We always find ourselves drawn to the paddle wheel, often draped in kelp, and the boiler, usually home to curious velvet crabs. Look closely in the nooks and crannies – butterfish dart between the fragments, and we’ve spotted blennies peeking out from under rusted plates more times than we can count. It’s not a grand, intact wreck, but a fascinating, intricate habitat that evolves with every tide. Go on a sunny day if you can; the light filtering through the kelp makes the whole scene glow.
