Shenick Reef - Manitoba & Prairie Lakes

Smal, on Aruba’s Leeward Coast, is one of those sites we always try to hit when we're in the area. It's a genuine coral reef, not just rubble with a few sponges. The corals here feel established, solid, creating plenty of nooks and crannies for things to hide in. We’ve found hawksbill turtles resting on ledges, blending in until you’re right on top of them. The fish life isn't about massive schools, but rather a consistent presence of smaller reef fish – goatfish sifting through the sand, and we’ve spotted the occasional Atlantic bumper darting past. Our favorite thing about Smal is the feeling of discovery; you really have to slow down and poke around. Look closely for things like the Glory-of-the-Atlantic cones or the intricate patterns of a hieroglyphic cone shell tucked away. It’s not a drift dive or a wreck site, it's a pure reef experience where patience pays off. Smal suits divers who enjoy a relaxed pace and appreciate the smaller, often overlooked details of a healthy Caribbean reef. Go when the light is good, mid-morning usually, for the best visibility through the coral structures.
