Whitestone Reef - Manitoba & Prairie Lakes

Lizard Island Reef sits north, where the GBR gets serious. It’s less about a single named dive site and more about the entire fringing reef system around the island itself. We love the drift dives you can get along the eastern side, particularly when the tide is pushing gently. You just float past these immense bommies, almost like underwater skyscrapers, absolutely covered in stony corals. We've seen Chinese lettuce coral colonies here that are easily a meter across, a real spectacle of delicate folds. Keep an eye out for Spitlure Frogfish camouflaged on those corals, they’re tricky little devils but so rewarding to spot. Visibility here often hits 25-30 meters on a good day, the water a brilliant sapphire. The sheer density of smaller reef fish, like Indo-Pacific sergeants and scissortail sergeants, sometimes forms silver curtains around the coral heads. It’s not just a big fish destination, though you’ll see plenty of Blue-finned Rock Cod lurking. It’s the micro-details that stand out – the tiny Queensland Eviota darting about, or the subtle patterns on a cowry shell tucked into a crevice. This is a place for divers who appreciate healthy, intricate reef ecosystems and don’t mind a bit of current to explore them.
