Frontenac (Wrack) - Québec

The Frontenac, affectionately called the Wrack by locals, is a cold-water shipwreck that genuinely surprises. Not for its size, but for the sheer volume of freshwater life that has completely taken over the hull. We love how the wreck itself feels alive, a metal skeleton teeming with thousands of tiny fish. You'll descend into that cool, clear water, and the wreck emerges from the gloom, its structure softened by years underwater. Schools of iridescent shiners swarm the superstructure, parting for you then reforming like liquid silver. Look closely and you’ll spot a mottled sculpin tucked into a crevice, or perhaps a curious American eel peeking from a porthole. Our favourite time to dive here is late morning when the ambient light penetrates just enough to illuminate the thick schools of yellow perch that congregate over the deck. It’s a completely different vibe from your typical tropical wreck dive, more like exploring an artificial reef in a vast freshwater aquarium. Stronger currents can pick up, so check conditions, but on a calm day, it’s an incredibly peaceful dive.
