Gibson Reef - Québec

Vittensten, for us, is less about a traditional reef and more about an intriguing geological anomaly in the Baltic. You’re not dropping onto tropical coral here, obviously. Instead, picture ancient, submerged rock formations, barnacle-encrusted and draped in hardy Baltic flora. We love how the light filters through the green-brown water, illuminating patches of Irish moss and ribbon weed swaying gently with the surge. Keep an eye out for the resident dab and the occasional flat periwinkle clinging to the rocks. It’s a completely different vibe from a typical ocean dive, a quiet exploration of a unique ecosystem. The real draw at Vittensten is the opportunity to see species you just won't find elsewhere in Europe, adapted to these brackish, cold conditions. Our favourite moments here are often just hovering, watching the transparent gobies dart between cracks. We’ve even been lucky enough to spot the elusive sea lamprey, a truly primordial sight. This site suits divers who appreciate subtle beauty and unique biological adaptations, a chance to explore a truly distinct underwater landscape. It's an excellent pick for those looking for something genuinely different from their usual dive destinations.
