James C. King (Wreck) - Québec

The James C. King isn't about tropical fish or warm water. This is Great Lakes wreck diving, a different beast entirely, and we love it for its moody, almost solemn character. Dropping down, you feel the chill of the freshwater instantly, and the visibility can play games, but when it opens up, the King materializes out of the gloom. She’s a wooden freighter, and you can practically taste the history as you fin past her ribs and decking. The structure is remarkably intact in parts, offering plenty to explore – we particularly like nosing around the cargo hold. Don’t expect vibrant corals; instead, watch for the surprisingly robust freshwater ecosystem. Yellow Perch often dart through the skeletal remains, and we’ve seen some chunky Lake whitefish cruising by. Keep an eye out for Mottled Sculpin clinging to the timbers, their camouflage is excellent. This site is for divers who appreciate history, the quiet majesty of a sunken vessel, and don't mind a bit of a chill. It's a proper wreck dive, best for those with some experience in lower visibility and colder conditions.
