Keystorm (Wreck) - Québec

The Keystorm wreck isn't about tropical fish and warm water, let's get that clear from the start. This is cold-water wreck diving at its most rewarding, a proper piece of history sunk deep in the St. Lawrence. We’re talking about a coal freighter that went down in 1912, and it’s still remarkably intact, a testament to the cold freshwater preservation. What we love about the Keystorm is the sheer scale and how much there is to explore. We’ve spent hours on this ship. You can penetrate the stern section, carefully finning through the cargo holds where the light filters down in eerie shafts. It feels like stepping back in time. You’ll find pike lurking in the shadows, sometimes a huge Lake Sturgeon ghosting past the bow, and we’ve often spotted schools of Yellow Perch darting in and out of the superstructure. Visibility can vary, but on a good day, it's easily 15-20 metres, offering clear views of the entire vessel. Our favourite moment is always coming across the massive anchor chains, still draped over the bow, just as they were over a century ago. This site is definitely for experienced wreck divers comfortable with cold water and deeper depths, but for those up to the challenge, it’s a dive that truly stays with you.
