Logging Barge - Québec

The Logging Barge in Québec is one of those unexpected finds. It's not the vibrant coral reef you might dream of, but it has a real character that we love. This old wooden barge, now resting on the lakebed, offers a surprisingly rich dive. You descend into the cool, dark freshwater, and as your eyes adjust, the silhouette of the barge slowly emerges. The wood is aged and covered in a thick layer of silty growth, a perfect home for freshwater critters. Our favourite part is exploring the deck, imagining it laden with logs. You'll find plenty of small perch and pike darting amongst the beams, sometimes even a snapping turtle if you’re lucky enough to spot one camouflaged on the bottom. It’s a quiet, contemplative dive, more about the history and the intimate exploration of a sunken piece of the past than big pelagics. We’d suggest going on a sunny day for the best light penetration; it makes a real difference to the visibility and the mood. It’s a superb dive for wreck enthusiasts who appreciate the subtle beauty of freshwater ecosystems and a touch of local history.
