Marquette (Wrack) - Québec

The Marquette, or Wrack as we often call it, is a surprisingly compelling little wreck just off the Québec shore. At a consistent 11 metres, it’s a perfect depth for just about anyone, and we love how accessible it feels. What you’ll find is the broken hull of a paddle steamer, resting in two main sections, scattered across the silty bottom. It’s not a grand, intact vessel, but that’s precisely its charm; you get to trace the outline of its past, picking out rusted boiler plates and scattered timbers. Visibility can swing a bit here, but when it's good, say 5-7 metres, the light filters down beautifully, giving the metal a greenish glow. Our favourite part is spotting the schools of Cisco – they really seem to thrive in the shadow of the wreck, swirling around the larger plates. It’s a quiet, contemplative dive, more about the history and the subtle interaction with the freshwater fish than big pelagics. Definitely one for wreck enthusiasts who appreciate the stories ships tell, even in fragments. We’d suggest a calm morning for the best viz.
