North Wind (Wrack) - Québec

The North Wind wreck is probably our favourite dive in the whole St. Lawrence. It’s not about flashy colours here, it’s about history and the sheer scale of the thing. Dropping down, the cold water bites a bit, but then the huge outline of the steamer starts to resolve out of the gloom. We’re talking a proper ship, not just a pile of planks. You can spend a whole dive just tracing the deck, imagining the cargo and the crew. The bow, in particular, has this commanding presence, still pointing upriver even after all these years. Inside the holds, if you’re comfortable with overheads, there’s a real sense of being in another time. It’s dark, obviously, so a good torch is non-negotiable. We've seen fat cisco hanging out in the darker corners, and rainbow smelt darting around the decaying superstructure. It's a sombre, reflective dive, perfect for those who appreciate wrecks with a real story rather than just a colourful reef. The currents here can be tricky, so check the tides, and don't push your limits. We always plan this one as a deeper, longer dive to really soak it all in.
