Waome (Wrack) - Québec

There’s something about a freshwater wreck that just hits differently, and the Waome (Wrack) in Québec is a prime example. We love how the history here is so palpable, a wooden schooner settling into its final resting place, completely taken over by the lake. This isn’t a vibrant coral garden, obviously; instead, you get incredible contrasts – the dark wood of the hull against the often green-tinged freshwater, shafts of light filtering down. Visibility can be a bit of a crapshoot, but when it’s good, you can make out the mast structure, sometimes even the deck planking. Our favourite part is peeking into the cargo holds, imagining what this boat carried. Pumpkinseed fish seem to own the place, darting in and out of the cracks, and you'll often find schools of Cisco or Lake Whitefish cruising silently by. Slimy Sculpins are masters of camouflage here, blending right into the decaying wood. It’s a dive that rewards slow exploration, perfect for those who appreciate history and the quiet beauty of a wreck transformed into a living habitat. Bring a good torch, even on sunny days, to really cut through the lake's embrace.
