Wawinet (Wrack) - Québec

Diving the Wawinet is less about vibrant coral and more about chilling with history, which we totally dig. This isn't a tropical reef, obviously, but what you find here is a genuine relic, a wooden steamer that went down in the early 20th century. We love poking around the collapsed hull, feeling the cold, dark water embrace the past. Visibility can be a real grab bag, sometimes twenty feet, sometimes a murky five, so be ready to adjust your expectations. That said, the low light often makes the wreck feel even more atmospheric. We've seen fat Yellow Perch darting through the timbers and even spotted a few longnose gar lurking in the deeper, darker sections. Keep an eye out for the pumpkinseed, their bright orange bellies are a nice splash of colour against the subdued greens and browns. It's a great spot for wreck enthusiasts who appreciate the quiet solitude of a submerged piece of history, rather than a busy reef. You don't need to be an expert to enjoy it, but good buoyancy helps when you're navigating the tight spots within the wreck's remains.
