Whyte Reef - Québec

Lizard Island Reef really nails that outer-reef feeling without being a total expedition. We love how the reef just drops away here, not a sheer wall, more like a tiered garden sloping down into the blue. Our favourite is drifting along the shallower sections, maybe 10-15 metres, where the light plays through the staghorn corals. You'll see schools of fusiliers here, often so thick they shimmer like a curtain in front of you. Keep an eye out for saddleback butterflyfish picking their way through the coral heads, and we’ve had some cracking encounters with orange-lined triggerfish too, sometimes a little feisty if you get too close to their territory. This spot is great for divers who appreciate healthy coral structures and don't mind a gentle current to carry them along. Visibility is generally excellent, often 20 metres plus, making it easy to spot everything from the small giant clams tucked into the reef to the occasional barred trevally patrolling the deeper edges. We’d suggest going in the morning; the light is just better for photography, and the reef feels a bit more awake.
