They really specialise in taking smaller groups, often just two or three divers, which means you get that personalised attention that makes such a difference. This is our pick for divers who want to escape the sometimes frenetic pace of Playa del Carmen or downtown Cozumel, offering a quieter, more intimate dive experience right from the beach. Diving with Paamul means you’re often heading out to explore the reefs closer to their base, which can be less crowded than the famous southern sites. We particularly enjoy their trips to the local cenotes; the play of light filtering through the cavern ceilings into the cool, dark water is mesmerising, almost like diving in liquid stained-glass. The visibility in these freshwater systems is usually incredible, sometimes over 50 metres, making for some seriously surreal photo opportunities. We’d suggest going early in the morning to beat any potential crowds and to catch the best of that dramatic light.
