Client Reefs - Alaska

The Trade Wind, or "Wrack" as some call her, is less a wreck and more a scattered history lesson. We're talking about a tugboat that met a rather fiery end back in the 1930s, leaving a debris field that’s surprisingly compelling. Forget neat, intact hulls; this is a place to hunt for pieces, to feel the ripple of cold freshwater as you trace the outline of a boiler, or perhaps a section of twisted metal that once held a deck in place. We love the challenge here, the way you have to really slow down and appreciate the smaller details. Visibility can be a real crapshoot in the Great Lakes, but when it's good, you’ll spot burbot ghosting along the bottom, their mottled skin blending perfectly with the old timber. We’ve even seen schools of Golden Shiners flash past the bigger sections of wreckage, darting in and out of the shadows. Our favourite moments are when the light penetrates just right, illuminating the eerie shapes of machinery long reclaimed by the lakebed. This site is for divers who appreciate the story more than the spectacle, who don't mind a bit of a search, and who can handle the often-chilly embrace of freshwater diving. It's a truly unique dive in the Canadian interior.
