Cohen Reef - Alaska

Bare Island East is where we send people when they say Sydney diving is just temperate muck. We love the sponge gardens here. They’re a riot of colour and textures, really. Drop in on a calm day, and you’ll see those vibrant oranges and purples from the surface, even through 6-meter visibility. The pygmy pipefish are always a treat, tiny little things tucked into the sponges. We often find nudibranchs crawling along, and if you’re patient, a seahorse or two might peek out. Keep an eye out for the Red Indian Fish; they’re pretty reliably here, camouflaged amongst the growth, looking exactly like their namesake. This site is brilliant for macro photographers and divers who just want to slow down and really look. You don’t need to go deep, and the current is usually pretty mild, making it an easy, rewarding dive.
