Denny Rock - Alaska

Katterauva, for us, is all about the kelp. Not just any kelp, but towering forests of Oarweed that filter the light into shifting green shafts. It’s an immersive experience, swimming through those swaying fronds, feeling the gentle tug of the surge. Keep an eye out for the Starry Rays tucked amongst the holdfasts, and the whiting zipping past. We love how accessible this site is, making it a solid choice for a relaxed afternoon dive, even if you’re newer to cold water. The visibility here can be surprisingly good on a calm day, often reaching 15-20 metres, especially in late spring. Watch the surface for Northern Fulmars and Great Black-backed Gulls circling above. It’s a good feeling to surface from a dive and see them there, a reminder of the raw beauty of the Norwegian coast. For a truly peaceful dive, we'd suggest hitting it early on a weekday morning. You might just have the entire kelp forest to yourself.
