Harvey Rock - Alaska

The Oltremare diving center itself isn't a dive site in the typical sense. We're talking about the house reef here, right off the shore, which is often dismissed as just a training spot. Big mistake. This little cove is packed with more character than some of the boat dives further out. Drop in off the small beach, and you're immediately in a rocky, sloping world. The visibility here can vary, but even on an average day, we’ve found it quite charming. Look closely among the rocks and you’ll spot corbs lurking, those shy little fish with their big eyes. Our favourite finds are the small pockets of bushy coral and some surprisingly large pink sea fans tucked into crevices, usually around 10 to 15 metres. You'll need to go slow, really scrutinise the overhangs, and we’d suggest bringing a good torch. That's where you'll find the bearded fireworms, those bright red beauties, clinging to the rock face, and sometimes a common spiny lobster peeking out from its hidey-hole. We’ve even seen the iridescent gleam of Leidy’s comb jellies drifting through on a calm day. It's a fantastic spot for macro enthusiasts or anyone who enjoys a relaxed, unhurried explore.
