McCreight Rock - Alaska

Santa Caterina is one of those Albanian spots we always point people towards, especially if they’re looking for a good shore dive with something a bit different. Drop in and you’re straight onto a gradual slope that’s just carpeted with life. We love the way the light filters through the water, catching the bright orange of the Sunset cup corals and the deeper reds of the Scarlet and Bushy Corals. It’s not about big pelagics here, though you’ll see plenty of poor cod darting about. What really grabs you are the smaller details: the way a Bearded Fireworm slowly navigates a rock face, or the delicate fronds of a European fan-worm retracting as you approach. Keep an eye out for Mediterranean Slipper Lobsters tucked into crevices. The black leather sponges are everywhere, providing shelter for all sorts of smaller critters. It’s a photographer's dream if you like macro. This site suits divers who prefer taking their time, exploring every nook and cranny rather than zooming through. Aim for a mid-morning dive; the angle of the sun really makes the colours pop.
