Barcaza 651 - Mar del Plata
The Barcaza 651 is a personal favourite when we’re in Mar del Plata. It’s not about depth here, it’s about atmosphere and how marine life has utterly reclaimed this old barge. Dropping onto it, you’re immediately enveloped in the wreck itself, a skeletal structure that’s completely encrusted with mussels and anemones. We love how the light filters through the shallow water, highlighting the schools of silversides that dart through the structure, looking for a quick meal. This site is perfect for photographers, especially macro enthusiasts. Take your time, really look into the crevices, and you’ll find nudibranchs, small crabs, and blennies peeking out. The visibility can be a bit variable, typical for coastal sites, so we always suggest checking the local conditions before heading out. Our best dives here have been on calm, sunny mornings when the water is settled, offering uninterrupted views of this incredible artificial reef. It’s a gentle dive, making it great for newer divers, but seasoned wreck enthusiasts will appreciate the details too.

- barge
- Cause
- scuttled
Resting in the shallow, accessible waters off Mar del Plata, the Barcaza 651 is an excellent introduction to the region's wreck diving. While the specific history and date of its sinking are not well-documented, it is believed to be one of several vessels intentionally scuttled to create an artificial reef system. At a comfortable depth of just 8 meters, the wreck is perfect for novice divers, photographers, and those looking for a long, relaxed dive.
Today, the simple structure of the barge has been thoroughly colonized by marine life. Its hull provides shelter for small fish, crabs, and colorful anemones. With excellent light penetration due to its shallow depth and a superstructure that sometimes breaks the surface, the Barcaza 651 offers a vibrant and easy-to-navigate dive site that showcases the rich biodiversity of the Argentine coast.
