Carumbé - Mar del Plata

Carumbé isn't about depth; it's about history, right there in the shallows of Mar del Plata. This isn't a drift dive or a coral exploration. It's an accessible wreck site, literally at three meters, making it perfect for newer divers, or those just looking for a relaxed, easy dive. The wreck itself, a steamer sunk in the 1920s, has become a home for all sorts of local critters. We love hovering over the rusted hull, spotting conger eels peeking from crevices and the occasional Patagonian octopus tucked into the nooks. Visibility here can be a bit variable, especially after a storm, but on a calm day, the sunlight filters through beautifully, illuminating the wreck's structure. You can easily spend a good 45 minutes just slowly circling the remains, peering into the old engine room, and watching the fish. We've seen schools of silversides glimmering around the bow, and often find rockfish clinging to the plates. It’s an interesting contrast to the deeper wrecks you might find elsewhere, proving that compelling diving isn't always about going deep. Go early in the morning for the best light and fewest people.
