CHARATA - Mar del Plata

Charata, sitting shallow in Mar del Plata, isn't your typical wreck dive, and that's precisely why we love it. At a maximum depth of two metres, this is more of an archaeological exploration than a deep plunge. The Charata, a wooden fishing vessel, met its end in a storm back in the 1970s, and its remains are spread across the sandy bottom, creating a fascinating scatter of ribs and hull planks. We've spent hours here, poking around the various sections. You can almost feel the storm surge that broke her apart. Sunlight filters down, illuminating the way through the kelp that now sways over the timbers. This isn't a site for big pelagics, but look closely, and you'll find plenty. We've seen crabs scuttling amongst the debris and small schooling fish using the wreckage for shelter. It's a fantastic spot for photographers looking for interesting textures and light play, especially on calm, bright days. Our favourite tip? Go at high tide for the best visibility; the shallower the water, the more the surge kicks up the sand. This is a perfect dive for snorkelers or newer divers who want to experience a wreck without the depth or current challenges.
