Ciudad de Encarnación - Mar del Plata

We’ve done a lot of wreck diving, but the Ciudad de Encarnación always sticks with us. It’s not a deep dive, only five metres down, but that shallow depth doesn’t make it any less compelling. The wreck is pretty broken up, classified as dangerous, which is fair warning, but it’s that very brokenness that makes it so interesting. You’re not just swimming over a ship; you’re navigating through a jumble of twisted metal, beams, and plates, all sculpted by the relentless Atlantic surge. What makes it special? The light. At five metres, the sun still penetrates, dappling the rusty hull sections. It’s an entirely different experience than the usual gloom of deeper wrecks. We’ve spent hours here, just observing how the light plays on the structure and illuminates the kelp forests that have taken root. Schools of hake dart between the gaps, and the occasional sea lion might even make a curious pass, its silhouette briefly eclipsing the sun. Our favourite part is exploring the smaller nooks and crannies that the kelp hasn't entirely swallowed. You’ll spot crabs scuttling amongst the debris, and anemones clinging to the metalwork. It’s a site that really makes you feel the power of the ocean, how it reclaims and transforms. The Ciudad de Encarnación is a perfect dive for those who appreciate the historical echo of a wreck, combined with a vibrant, shallow ecosystem. Don't expect pristine coral, but do expect character and a raw, engaging dive. We’d suggest going on a calm day for the best visibility; it really enhances the effect of the light.
