CIUDAD DEL PLATA - Mar del Plata

We’ve done a fair few wreck dives in our time, but the Ciudad del Plata just hits differently. It’s not about depth here, it’s about character. Sitting in just 8 meters of water, this old freighter, wrecked back in 1917, is completely given over to the ocean. You drop onto the main deck, and what strikes you first is the sheer amount of light filtering through the water, even on an overcast day. The wreck itself is a playground for macro enthusiasts and history buffs alike. We love picking through the collapsed superstructure, imagining the ship's final moments. Our favourite spot is the stern, where the propeller shaft housing is now home to an array of nudibranchs, often some vibrant flabellinas. Keep an eye out for the shoals of silversides darting in and out of the holds; they can be so thick you feel like you're swimming through liquid mercury. It's a proper adventure for newer wreck divers or anyone who appreciates the slow, beautiful decay of steel. Just remember, it can get silty if you’re not mindful of your fins.
