DICHOSA AMELIA - Mar del Plata

Dichosa Amelia isn't your typical deep-blue wreck dive. She’s a ghost, really, a steamship that ran aground way back in 1932, practically on the beach in Mar del Plata. The real draw here? It's a wreck you can wade to, sometimes even stroll right out to at low tide. We love that it’s so accessible. You'll spend your time peering into shallows, spotting tiny crabs scuttling amongst the rusted plates and juvenile fish darting through what’s left of her superstructure. The water itself is often a vibrant, almost jade green, stirred up by the nearby port, so don't expect gin-clear visibility. But that murk adds to the mystique. We've seen cormorants perched on her highest points, and sometimes, if you're lucky, a curious sea lion might pop its head up nearby. It’s definitely a site for snorkelers, photographers looking for a dramatic above-water shot, or anyone who just wants to get up close to a piece of history without needing a tank. Our advice? Go at low tide, preferably on a calm day, and bring a sturdy pair of reef shoes – those rusted edges are sharp.
