DON CARLES - Mar del Plata

Don Carles is one of those wrecks that just keeps giving, especially if you’re into the rust and history of it all. This isn't some deep, dark mystery; the stern often breaks the surface, especially at low tide, making for a super relaxed entry, though we always suggest going with a local who knows the currents around here. Drop below and you’re immediately enveloped by the remains of this old fishing trawler, sunk back in '99. We love how the superstructure is still largely intact, allowing for some great swim-throughs if you're comfortable with overhead environments. Keep an eye out for the resident crabs scuttling across the deck plates and the occasional conger eel peeking from the darker recesses. Visibility can swing quite a bit, but when it’s good, the light plays beautifully through the wreck, illuminating the schools of silversides that flicker around the mast. Don Carles is brilliant for wreck enthusiasts who appreciate accessible history and the way the sea reclaims what was lost.
